Picket Fence Pulley Planters

If you haven't noticed, pulleys are all the rage.  I've always loved them for their rustic, farmhousey (okay, that's not a word), semi-industrial look, but I also love them for their usefulness.  Here's a project I did for a viewer who was confined to a wheelchair, but wanted picket fence hanging baskets - pulleys to the rescue!

MATERIALS

Planter

Paint stirrers

Eye hooks

Rope

Pulley

Bailing wire

STEPS

Attach your screw eyes into the planter in three spots equal distance apart.  If your planter walls are not super thick, pre-drill them to prevent splitting the wood.  Thread three equal lengths of rope through the screw eyes and knot them.

Bring the three pieces together above the planter, loop the ends over and secure with a bit of bailing wire.

For the pickets I used good, ol' paint stir sticks.  I attached mine with hot glue, but if you're more patient than I am, you can use wood glue for a real sturdy hold.

Keep going around until the entire planter is covered and give it a good coat of white paint.

Hang your pulley and add a coat hook to the wall where you can tie off your rope.  Use the bailing wire to create a loop in one end of the rope (I used a thicker rope here) and thread the rope through the pulley.

Use an S hook to join the planter and the rope...

...and hoist into place!
